Peregrine Semiconductor Expands High-Frequency Product Line With Next-Generation Phase-Locked Loop

Device features low phase noise Figure of Merit and supports operation at 5 GHz

San Diego, California, June 4, 2013Peregrine Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: PSMI), a fabless provider of high-performance radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs), today announced from booth #1811 at the International Microwave Symposium in Seattle it has further expanded its high- frequency product line with the Integer-N PE33241 Phase-Locked Loop (PLL). The UltraCMOS® technology-based PLL features a very low phase noise Figure of Merit (FOM) of -230 dBc/Hz, which improves the signal-to-noise ratio, thereby helping to reduce the overall system cost while improving performance. The device supports operation at 5 GHz with a 10/11 prescaler modulus, making it ideal for industrial transceivers, specialized transceivers, and clock generators requiring low phase noise. The PE33241 PLL is ideal for RF frequency generation; L, S and C-band synthesizers; and clock recovery in communication systems, mobile terminals, telemetry, radar, and portable radios.

“Peregrine has been manufacturing PLLs for more than 20 years, and we’re pleased to expand our flagship product line with high- frequency PE33241 PLL,” said Mark Schrepferman, director of the commercial and industrial product  line with Peregrine’s High-Performance Solutions business unit. “Peregrine’s UltraCMOS technology continues to enable industry-leading performance across numerous key specifications, including very low phase noise.”

The low phase noise FOM of -230 dB/Hz in the PE33241 PLL reduces interference, thereby improving the link quality of the communication system. The PLL features a selectable prescaler modulus of 5/6 or 10/11, which provides design flexibility and minimizes unwanted frequency spurs.  The device supports operation at 5 GHz with the 10/11 prescaler modulus, and 4 GHz with the 5/6 prescaler modulus. An integrated phase detector and flexible serial or direct hard-wire interfaces provide additional design flexibility. The new PLL features low power consumption of only 80 mA at 2.8V, which reduces thermal issues and extends battery life.

Development Tool Support

Peregrine also unveiled the PE33241 Evaluation Kit today, to enable designers to evaluate the new PLL in their applications. The kit has a USB-to-Serial programming interface to allow customers to easily control the PLL. It can be ordered in late June, from Peregrine’s global direct sales representatives and worldwide distribution partners.

Packaging, Pricing & Availability

The PE33241 Integer-N PLL is available in a 7 mm x 7 mm 48-lead QFN package, as well as in die form. Samples can be ordered in late June, and volume-production quantities are expected to be available in late July, from Peregrine’s global direct sales representatives and worldwide distribution partners.
